Dubai day 6

Sunday May 5

Once again I apologise for letting time get away from me between blogs.
We arrived in Dubai late Tuesday afternoon.  Early hours of Wednesday morning I woke up feeling unwell and slept for most of the next two days.  Hopefully that is the last of Delhi belly.

First impression of Dubai, sandy!
On arrival it was hot but not as hot as India but it is getting hotter by the day.  Lisa and Kenny said by the end of the month it is so hot they can't ride or walk outside and the ocean is too hot to swim in.

The normal working week in Dubai is Sunday to Thursday so we spent Friday and Saturday, Lisa and Kenny's week-end with them.  Friday morning we went to the mall (one of the many) and had breakfast and a look around.  The mall is impressive if you like shops, new and absolutely every shop possible under one roof.  It is just like Chatswood in Sydney, Chadstone in Melbourne or Chermside in Brisbane.  Look at that, all C's.  I bought full piece swimmers, the closest thing I could get to a burkini without going for full cover.  Only joking! but it is a full piece with boy legs.  Gives a bit more coverage than my bikini.  I got to try it out on Friday afternoon.  We went to the beach for a couple of hours.  The water was cool and clear.  We played frisbee, I must say my frisbee skills have improved since Kovalam.  The beach is a half hour drive from here, on a highway with everyone driving flat out.

Friday night we'd thought we have a big splash out dinner - to celebrate the four of us being in Dubai together.  We went to a local restaurant in a resort called 'Desert Palms'.  It was beautiful, both the food and surrounds.  Like I said it was a splurge even with the vouchers Lisa and Kenny had - buy one meal and get one free but it was a fun night and definitely worth the money.

Lisa and Kenny have a couple of local supermarkets they use which are well stocked and have everything you need.  The food is imported to Dubai from all over the world.  Groceries are what we'd expect to pay at home.  Fruit and vegetables seem to be cheaper.  Lisa and Kenny prefer going to the fruit and vegetable market on the week-end.  We went along for a look on Saturday.  They pay a young Bangladeshi guy 'Muhammad' who goes around with them and helps deal with the stall owners.  It definitely pays to have local help.

Interesting fact about Dubai - 25% of the population are Emirates, the rest of the population is made up of imported labour whether it be expats, Indians, Filipinos and Bangladeshi.  It is a surreal place - quite odd.
